What It’s Like To Visit Helia House in Miami

For Elizabeth Trattner, AP, DOM, a doctor of Chinese Medicine, healing has as much to do with what you do to your body as what you surround yourself with. That’s why she created Helia House, a luxury space dedicated to healing from the outside in.

When Dr. Trattner was younger, she dealt with chronic sickness and allergies. After she graduated college, she says she suffered from “an asthma attack so bad I almost died, because I was being exposed to a lot of things in the environment that were making me sick.” It was this experience that inspired the creation of Helia House.

“Because of what I went through, I wanted to create something that wasn’t just green, and it wasn’t [just] non-toxic, and it wasn’t just sustainable, and it wasn’t just biophilic, and it wasn’t xeriscaped. I wanted to put all of those components together to create Healia House—which is really wellness from the ground up,” she says. “I wanted to incorporate so many elements of healing that we really don’t think about it in our day-to-day.”

In designing Helia House, Trattner tapped environmentalists, Feng Shui Masters, and other experts to help her craft a space that’s filled with good vibes and free of potential irritants like mold, VOCs, and formaldehyde. The sunlit, mid-century modern home is overflowing with greenery to deliver the benefits of biophilia, the concept of experiencing the outdoors inside.

In her practice, Dr. Trattner uses traditional healing methods like crystal healing, acupuncture, and gua sha to treat her patients. “I am an advanced crystal master, so the building has over 1000 crystals in it,” she says. “I focus mostly on women’s health, things like chronic disease, digestion issues, and cosmetic acupuncture.”

For the latest episode of What the Wellness, host Ella Dove, Well+Good’s director of creative development, stopped by Helia House to experience all of this firsthand. During her visit, she was treated to an acupuncture session with Dr. Trattner that focused on improving her digestion and sleep quality (while also sculpting her face). No spoilers—you’ll have to watch the video for those—but the session left her feeling totally blissed out.

“Nobody completely sinks you into the experience the way Dr. Trattner does,” says Dove. “I hope that you…have the opportunity to come here and try for yourself because it is really a one of a kind.”
