Maggie Beer reveals why she could never be a contestant on MasterChef
She has appeared several times as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia and will return to the franchise on Monday night’s episode.
But Australian culinary queen Maggie Beer admitted on Monday that while she’s a regular on the cooking show, she could never hack it as a contestant.
‘Personally, I could never be a contestant [on MasterChef] as I don’t cope well cooking under that kind of pressure. The pressure I place on myself when I cook is bad enough!’ the 77-year-old told New Idea.

Maggie, who will challenge the contestants on Monday’s episode to cook a dish using ingredients from her own pantry, revealed the experience was ‘so much fun’.
‘It was amazing to see the different ways they approached the challenge and the food they created,’ she said.
Despite not having any formal training as a chef, Maggie has had a stellar career spanning almost five decades and has no plans on slowing down anytime soon.

She previously told The Daily Telegraph that MasterChef contestants should not be in it for ‘fame’ but simply for the ‘love of food’.
‘There can be a romantic dream about a future in food. They can have rose-coloured glasses about how hard it is in the industry,’ she said.
‘So long as they are not wanting to do this for fame but for the love of food and learning and creativity (they will excel). The fame thing can get in the way.’

Maggie, who also stars as a judge alongside Matt Moran on The Great Australian Bake Off, said MasterChef offers amateur cooks a valuable experience.
‘What MasterChef Australia does is give them the food equivalent of a sea change — to see if it (a career in food) is just a hobby or if they want to take it further.’
The bestselling cookbook author went on to reveal that she doesn’t see the point in retiring when she enjoys her job so much.
Maggie’s guest appearance on MasterChef Australia airs tonight at 7.30pm on Ten.
