Art has always been a mirror for society, capturing achievements and setbacks.

What first thing comes to mind when we hear the word “ART.” For some, it is the feeling of liberation from the 9–5 job, while for others, it is about alleviating the ethereal form of mind and soul. However, when it comes to driving change in society, art has been a critical part of human civilisation, acting as a medium of expression, communication, and reflection. Art has always been a mirror for society, capturing achievements and setbacks.

According to a report published by Grant Thornton Bharat and India Art Investor, the Indian art market maintained its position of strength in FY23, clocking in a mammoth turnover of $144.3 million through the sale of 3,833 works. In fact, throughout history, artists have used their creative power to communicate ideas, provoke thought, and evoke emotions that can lead to meaningful social change. Rajesh Krishnan, Founder and Principal Designer, East Craft Designs, says, “Indian artists of today are not only historians but also active change-makers like The NISD building’s artwork powerfully addresses substance abuse and elderly care, adding depth and beauty to the space is how artists use their artistic expression to promote social justice.”

Krishnan shares how Art acts as a catalyst for social change

  1. Raise awarenessArt has no rules; it is self-expressive and creative. Whether it is through customized signage or thought-provoking digital art, this field has captured a society’s collective memories and reflected its ever-evolving ideals and culture.
  2. Inspire actionPowerful art can motivate individuals and communities to take action towards positive change. Whether it’s a street play urging environmental conservation or a documentary highlighting human rights violations, art can be a catalyst for social movements.
  3. Evoke empathy and spark conversationArtworks allow viewers to connect with experiences beyond their own, fostering empathy and understanding for marginalised communities. Furthermore, art also sparks discussions about critical matters that would otherwise be swept under the rug. By prompting viewers to question the status quo, art paves the way for social progress.

Role of artists in driving the evolution

Krishnan adds, “Today, artists and creators use their art to educate the general public and advocate for social justice. Through their expressive ability, artists can question conventional myths, shift imagery, and evoke emotions in ways that traditional political approaches rarely can. For instance, many artists act as vocal advocates for social causes in India. Thus, artists use their work to challenge societal norms and celebrate diversity.”

Furthermore, artists are skilled documentarians, capturing the struggle and victory of marginalised communities. Their ability to capture the human experience through various mediums allows for a deeper understanding and connection to social issues. By shedding light on underserved communities, artists can bring about awareness and inspire change on a larger scale.

In addition, using their art to offer consolation and comfort to people going through difficult or uncertain times, they act as healers. “Artists can provoke emotions and thought processes through their creativity and empathy, which can ultimately lead to positive social change. For example, artists use their platform to speak out against social and political injustices, igniting crucial debates and inspiring public activism. This illustrates the tremendous influence that artists can have on influencing society and advancing a more just and equal global community,” shares Krishnan.

Art: Vehicle for societal change

There is no denying the fact that Indian artists are at the vanguard of social change, advocating for a more just and equitable society by challenging the status quo and utilising their creativity in the process. Art can effectively transform society. Thus, by using their art to raise awareness of important issues, artists can help to make a difference in the lives of others and build a better future for all.
