Danessa Myricks, makeup artist and founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty, knows a thing or two about creating mesmerizing, ground-breaking beauty looks. Her whimsical, colorful cosmetics line calls Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to mind: its array of pigments, glitters, and textures verges on the fantastic. Now, in 2022, one of the brand’s most innovative products just keeps going viral, and we’re here to put it to the test.

When Danessa Myricks Beauty’s Infinite Chrome Flakes launched on September 19, 2021, the brand’s entire inventory sold out in under 24 hours. After a third restock of the multichrome shades in November 2021, content creator Mikayla Nogueira posted a viral TikTok review showing off the full shade range. Sales skyrocketed a whopping 217 percent, and soon, a massive audience of makeup artists and creators were posting their own technicolor looks using the flashy topper. The Chrome Flakes have been trending ever since.

“I wanted to find a way to make the world of multichromatic [makeup] even more magical,” says Myricks of her inspiration for the flakes. “I mean, don’t we all secretly want to attend Euphoria High? And I was really determined that that magic should happen in one step,” she says.

That single-step application is part of what makes the Flakes so innovative. While most formulas that incorporate chunky glitters or foils typically require primer or another base to ensure staying power and a rich color payoff, this product’s pearl pigments are suspended in a water-based, translucent gel that sets and reflects light from every angle.

“The product contains polyvinyl alcohol, which is typically used in peel-off clear masks to give that vinyl look,” says cosmetic chemist Ginger King. “They can give a nice gloss, in addition to adhesion.”
