Celebrity makeup artist Scott Barnes has recently TikTok viral with a one-minute concealer hack that’s worth bookmarking. The makeup artist has worked for decades in Hollywood with high-profile clients like Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and Kelly Ripa and his latest tip is not only simple but also perfect for mature skin, giving under-eyes a smooth look that lasts all day.
In his TikTok tutorial, Barnes shares his secret: “I’m going to take 20 years off your face with Aquaphor, check this out. I use the Aquaphor Lip Repair underneath the eyes and it makes it [concealer] last longer and doesn’t get all caked up.”
The Hack Explained
Barnes’ trick revolves around the use of Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick under the eyes before applying concealer. This method helps to keep the under-eye area hydrated and prevents the concealer from settling into fine lines and creases. Although formulated for the lips, it keeps the skin plump and smooth throughout the day.
Barnes elaborates on his discovery: “I’ve figured this out after doing hours and hours of photoshoots and movies and music videos. How do I keep the concealer from not creasing up underneath the eyes after such long wear and this was Aquaphor.”
To follow Barnes’ instruction to the letter, apply your usual skin-care products, focusing on hydration. Gently swipe the Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick under each eye. Make sure to cover the entire area where you will be applying concealer. This creates a smooth, hydrated base.
Apply your concealer as usual over the Aquaphor, blending it out with a damp makeup sponge or your fingers for a seamless finish. To lock everything in place, lightly dust a setting powder over the concealed area. Barnes says, “I’m using Maybelline Color Stay powder. The stuff is like iron by the way.”
Why It Works for Mature Skin
This hack is particularly effective for dry and mature skin types. As skin ages, it tends to become drier and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Traditional concealers can often exacerbate these issues by settling into creases and creating a cakey appearance.
