According to a recent release, leading global aesthetics device company Cutera announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration just cleared the first and only energy-based laser device for the treatment of acne. The device, called AviClear, targets all ranges of the skin condition, from moderate to severe.
In a clinical study, Cutera found that the laser not only reduces the appearance of acne, but that it makes future breakouts shorter, less intense and more infrequent post-treatment. In addition, results continue to improve over time.
The device works by targeting the sebocytes within the dermis to suppress sebum production, slowing the formation of acne.
“Existing device treatments for acne are neither long-lasting nor particularly effective,” says Boston dermatologist and Cutera advisory board member Jeffrey S. Dover, MD per the release. “Topical therapies yield temporary results and oral medications present several challenges. AviClear offers patients a safe, well-tolerated, drug-free approach with durable results, which significantly shifts the treatment paradigm for acne.”
