In health care alone, 534,000 people left their jobs in August, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some left for other jobs, but others simply quit or retired. In long-term care, such as nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, 400,000 health-care personnel have left since the pandemic began, Frogner said.
