Met Gala 2024: Kendall Jenner’s Gown From Alexander McQueen’s 1999 Collection Is A Masterpiece

Kendall Jenner chose to bring back a couture masterpiece, which was a unique approach.

She made history by being the first to don both this dress and an item from Alexander McQueen’s 1999 Givenchy couture collection.

Met Gala 2024: At this year’s Met Gala, where the dress code revolved around The Garden of Time, many opted for floral interpretations. However, Kendall Jenner took a distinct route by choosing to revive a couture masterpiece. In a historic moment, she became the first person not only to wear this dress but also a creation from Alexander McQueen’s 1999 couture collection for Givenchy, a piece that had never been worn before.

Kendall’s black beaded gown boasted a low-cut corset bustier and a sculptural neckline adorned with cascades of gold and black fabric. Both shoulders of the gown were adorned with a shimmering gold fringe, which bounced as Kendall moved. Below Kendall’s waist, a V-shaped sheer panel transitioned seamlessly into a form-fitting maxi skirt, complete with a subtle train. Her dress reportedly featured over 100,000 black and brass beads, hand-embroidered for over 500 hours.

For styling, Kendall accessorised with custom Studio Amelia shoes and adorned herself with exquisite Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. To complement the ensemble, Jenner opted for an ultra-long and curly hairstyle, perfectly blending with the intricate beaded arm details of her gown.

The late designer, who was the creative director at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001, chose to display this particular dress, along with the broader collection, on mannequins rather than using models. For 25 years, the collection remained tucked away in Givenchy’s archives, never having graced the runway until now. Speaking to Vogue about her look, Kendall shared, “The theme, to me, screamed archival. It’s a beauty that’s been slept on. Plus, the way it’s cut in the back, and the low butt—all these beautiful things feel very me.”

The dress code for this year’s Met Gala, The Garden of Time, draws inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story. It explores the inherent link between time and natural beauty, allowing attendees to interpret the theme as they wish. This theme also harmonises with the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

This year’s Met Gala also marks Kendall’s 10th time gracing the red carpet. Back in 2023, she paid tribute to the Karl Lagerfeld theme, dazzling in a Marc Jacobs bodysuit adorned with black sequins. The standout piece boasted floor-grazing sleeves lined with quilted ivory fabric and a bedazzled pointed collar.
