A survey by YouGov for Drinkaware from June found 17 percent of 9,137 people said they wanted to reduce their intake when lockdown eased. But just 46 percent of them had cut down by this month.

Some 49 percent of those who failed told how alcohol helps with stress and anxiety, 36 percent said it beats boredom and 18 percent blamed loved ones for their drinking.

Annabelle Bonus of Drinkaware said: “Regularly drinking above 14 units a week can increase your risk of a range of health conditions including seven types of cancer.”
