Kate Garraway was lost for words upon realising she was sitting across from a nurse who saved her husband Derek Draper’s life, during Friday’s Good Morning Britain.

The broadcaster, 54, was interviewing Michael Rosen, 75, and his former carer Beth Dixon, who worked in the intensive care unit while he was in a coma with Covid in 2020.

Derek, also 54, returned home from hospital in April 2021 after a year-long battle with the virus, and still requires round-the-clock care in the midst of his lengthy recovery.

Beth had written the author letters while he was unconscious to help when he woke up, but the pair had never met before.

The ITV morning show welcomed her onto the set as a surprise, before it came to light that Michael and her husband Derek were only two beds away from each other.

Asking Beth if she would have cared for her husband, she replied: ‘I would have cared for him, yeah, we did everything we could.’

Her response left Kate emotional as she stood up and hugged Beth, thanking her, saying, ‘God that is amazing. Thank you so much by the way.’

She took time to chat to his wife Lynn, who was going through a similar struggle to Kate as a partner, with Lynn sharing: ‘And you don’t know how it is going the affect the non-affected person, as it was, because you’re still the same and they might not know how different they might be’

Kate agreed that there is a loss for both sides of the relationship: ‘There’s a loss I think, there’s a loss for them in the fact that they’re changed in some way, but there’s a loss that you have to adjust to as well, as a partner,’ she explained.

Kate also spoke on Derek’s condition during Wednesday morning’s Good Morning Britain, while chatting to The Bill star Chris Ellison, who has been diagnosed with the speech-debilitating condition aphasia.

She revealed how Derek can say some words, but not express himself completely, sharing: ‘In a sense Derek – because of Covid – has a version of this where he can understand, sometimes do odd words, but can’t express himself.’

Derek is currently in critical condition and needs round-the-clock care, with Kate previously admitting that if left unaided for over three days, he could die.

He is bed-stricken, with Kate doing much of the caring herself as she insists she won’t ‘ever give up on him’.
