Washing and changing bed sheets is also extremely critical, as a study reported by Insider, found that as many as 16 different species of fungus and millions of fungal spores can be found on one pillow. The most common out of all of these, Aspergillus fumigatus, is potentially dangerous causing allergic reactions, lunch infections, coughing, fever and shortness of breath.

Fungi is not the only thing found in unwashed bed sheets. In fact, up to 39 times more bacteria was found on an unwashed bed sheet in comparison to pet-food bowls and several thousands times more than a toilet seat.

This included the potentially fatal Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause staph infections, in some cases causing blood poisoning and toxic shock syndrome.

If all of this wasn’t enough, discussing the data, Dr Dawn Harper provided some more insight into the specific areas of the home that are often forgotten about, and as a result have become the dirtiest in our homes.
