Dr Amir says FFP2 and N95 masks ‘better’ for blocking out Covid

Dr Amir has joined ITV’s Lorraine to talk about how we can learn to live with Covid in the long run and the best protective measures. He explained that due to the virus’ airborne nature, the right type of mask and ventilation can offer good protection.

Surgical masks that were mainly used by hospital staff and doctors before the pandemic do offer protection against Covid.

But there are “better” options when it comes to coronavirus, the TV doctor shared.

He explained: “We know proper surgical masks are good but better is FFP2 mask or N95 mask, which will filter out 98 percent of aerosol particles.

“This virus is airborne, invest in infrastructure that will help protect us from future airborne viruses, not just Covid. That’s the way to live with this virus.”

These layers include a polypropylene filter which can trap the smallest airborne particles.

However, the Government rules on wearing face masks are changing.

From today, people are no longer advised to wear face masks in classrooms.

And on 27 January the mask guidance will be scrapped even further, with people not needing to wear masks in any setting.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid shared he’ll keep wearing his mask and others can also decide for themselves.
