For dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, deaths were up by 65 percent, according to the analysis.

“Excess deaths” are the number of deaths above the average for the corresponding period in the non-pandemic years of 2015 to 2019.

Deaths in private homes have been consistently well above the 2015 to 2019 average since April 2020, with some of these attributed directly to the coronavirus.

Gavin Terry, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We knew that people with dementia have been worst hit by the pandemic, but it’s staggering to see that deaths at home have increased by a shocking 65 percent – a stark reminder of the trauma faced by thousands of families affected over the last 18 months.”
