Common colds and other respiratory infections are firmly on the rise, spreading coughs and sneezes, more severe illnesses, and prompting some to report their worst colds ever. Fear not, with these top tips you can help combat cold and flu symptoms and help kickstart your immune system.

Topping up your vitamin C levels is another great way to help kickstart the healing.

This can include consuming oranges or kiwi’s or taking it in supplement form.

Vitamin C has been studied for many years as a possible treatment for colds, or as a way to help prevent colds.

Other studies in adults have found six to eight grams per day of vitamin C to be effective.

GP Dr Sarah Brewer also recommended staying inside and keeping warm if you feeling a cold coming on.

She said: “If the nose gets too cold, these immune systems don’t work properly, so you are more susceptible to infection.

“Staying indoors also limits the spread of infection. If you have to go out, wear a scarf around your nose to keep it warm and, if necessary, use a moisturising nasal spray.”

Nose and throat specialist, Adam Frosh said filling up on warm, nutritious comfort food helps makes us feel better too.

He also advised to stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water to beat that scratchy feeling that develops at the back of our throats when the temperatures drop.

Other useful tips to help dispel your cold quicker include:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Rest
  • Soothe a sore throat
  • Combat stuffiness
  • Relieve pain
  • Sip warm liquids
  • Try honey
  • Add moisture to the air
  • Try over-the-counter (OTC) cold and cough medications.
