A $1 million donation to Cleveland Clinic from The Clorox Co. of Oakland, Calif., will support the creation of a fund designed to promote “innovative research ideas, advance new training and education opportunities, and launch promising healthcare innovations.”
The clinic on Thursday, May 13, announced the Clorox donation and the launch of the Clorox Public Health Research Fund. The clinic and Clorox since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year have worked on health and safety measures to limit the spread of the virus in public spaces and the workplace.
In a news release, the clinic said the goals of the Clorox Public Health Research Fund include “initiating promising health technology, investigating new research approaches, and designing health care solutions.” The organizations said they initially will prioritize research focused on COVID-19. Research supported by the fund “will inform the development of tomorrow’s virus-fighting cleaners and other health and safety products, along with practices and protocols,” according to the news release.
“Research to better understand this pandemic is vitally important and where immediate funding makes a critical difference,” said Dr. Serpil Erzurum, chief research and academic officer at the clinic, in a statement. “Funds from Clorox will allow us to accomplish more and have a broader, meaningful impact on discovery and innovations for COVID-19 and for many other future public health threats.”
