An Australian nutritionist and author has shared her top five foods to eat to lose weight during the winter months. 

Olivia Hillier, from Brisbane, spilled her secrets on the foods to keep the kilos off in the cold and advises eating fibre-rich in-season foods including pomegranate, artichoke, oats, citrus fruits, and cruciferous vegetables like kale, Brussels spouts and broccoli. 

‘Weight loss is nothing but a simple equation of calories in vs. calories out to achieve your desired weight,’ Olivia said.

‘There is a list of foods that I recommend this winter when it comes to improving your overall gut health, energy, health, longevity and amazing clear skin and if these foods are eaten with the correct balance of micronutrients and calories, they can help you alongside any weight loss journey.’

Below Olivia shares her five favourite foods to eat to keep weight at bay throughout the chilly months with FEMAIL.  

1. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is loaded with a range of essential vitamins and minerals which is why Olivia adds the fruit to her prebiotic protein pancakes. 

Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants, and it can also assist in inflammation, supports brain function and digestion. 

2. Globe artichoke

Globe artichoke is a great addition to any winter three meet and veg dinner which not only dresses your plate up making it that little bit fancier, but is also a prebiotic. 

This means it feeds the bacteria in the gut, which gives you more gut diversity and a happier microbiome.

Recipe: Olivia’s prebiotic pomegranate protein pancakes 

Ingredients

1 sachet of Wednesday Cleanse Day tonic powder

1 banana

1 egg

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

1/2 cup oats

Dash of almond milk

1 pomegranate

Honey

Method

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blitz under smooth

Pour dollops of the mix onto a hot fry pan and cook until you start to see bubbles appear in the surface then flip

Cook for another few minutes and transfer to a plate

Top with pomegranate seeds and a drizzle of honey

3. Cruciferous vegetables

This includes eating a diverse range of kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and red cabbage all of which are seasonal winter vegetables, packed full of fibre, a large range of essential nutrients. 

They are absolutely delicious roasted or fried in the cooler winter months.’

There’s nothing better than a delicious warm bowl of oats on a cold frosted winter morning. 

Oats are great hearty meal over the winter months, they are full of fibre, and high in minerals and antioxidants. 

The best thing about oats is you can dress up your morning bowl with a range of in season fruits. 

5. Citrus fruits

Orange, lemons and limes are all in season during winter and they are jam packed with vitamin C to help support the immune system, antioxidants to assist in fighting off free radicals and loaded with Vitamin A which is fabulous for glowing skin.
