Scarlett Johansson’s skin-care line, The Outset, is finally here. And though it may have launched alongside other celebrity launches, Johansson assures us it stands out from the rest. “I don’t want to call it a system, but I wish there was one brand that was just, like, transparent and clean and easy,” the actress and entrepreneur said in a recent episode of Gloss Angeles podcast. “And then, I could use all the other stuff if I wanted to, but it was like something that was dependable. That is what The Outset is. We are really committed to clean, effective skin care.”
Now that she’s gotten her routine locked down—the star says she’s been testing the products for a year now and has gotten many compliments along the way—she can confidently say it has changed her skin, but Johansson isn’t shy about plugging the other skin-care, makeup and hair-care favorites she’s continued to use.
In classic Gloss Angeles style, hosts Kirbie Johnson and Sarah Tan asked Johansson what she had on her face during the call, to which she replied with, “I’ve gone through a bunch of different shampoos and stuff like that—it’s not really on my face, but it is above my face—and you know what’s so funny? I was going through all these different shampoos and expensive hair masks and honestly, nothing was working. I kept feeling like I had this hair that would be dry at the end and my scalp would be really, like, heavy. Of course, like all of us, I was like, ‘Alright girls, what is everybody using,” and you know what I ended up going back to? Biolage, like old-school Biolage with a huge pump. I love it! I use the shampoo and conditioner and it smells like high school, and my hair loves it.”
Johansson reminisces on the first makeup product she ever tried, which was the MAC Powder Blush ($25), before moving on to the makeup sporting her face during the episode. “I love the Pat McGrath Eyeliner ($32)—she makes the best eyeliner, I’ve tried them all. It’s Pat, she just figured it out. She makes such a good eyeliner, she makes such a good Mascara ($30)—I just love her makeup so much.”
Johansson also tells Kirbie and Sarah about the struggle of living in a dry climate like New York, and that she’s been using heaps of hand cream to keep her hands moisturized and healthy. “You know that Neutrogena Hand Cream ($6) that’s, like, old school? I keep that by the sink. It’s more of a balm than a lotion, but I just keep that by the sink because I wash my hands 40 times a day.”
When asked if she gets in-office treatments to preserve her skin, Johansson says she only uses her own products. “I’m an at-home skin-care person; I do my own facials, my own masks and there’s another really active line that’s not for every day that I discovered…It’s called Image Skincare, and you have to be mindful when you use it because it’s extremely active, but I do my peels at home. I’m a little bit of a control freak, and so I just like to take care of my own skin. Honestly, I really have been using these products in secret for a year and that’s it.”
