Having been a dermatologist for nearly 20 years, Deirdre Hooper, MD, has tried so many products. From retinoids to sunscreens to antioxidants, she’s tested it all. While her routine is constantly in flux, there’s one product that has remained a staple in her routine for the last 15 years—the Neocutis Lumière Eye Cream.

“I’ve tried every eye cream I think that might exist over the years and I’ve never applied one and thought it felt better than Lumière,” says Dr. Hooper, a 47-year-old board-certified dermatologist in Louisiana. “I just find that eyelid skin is such a trouble zone and it ages almost faster in so many of my patients than anything else. And I would say the proof is in the pudding. I’ve been using it for 15 years and I really think my eyelids have aged well.”

Over the years, Neocutis has released different iterations of its eye cream. Dr. Hooper first fell in love with the Lumière Illuminating Eye Cream ($99). Then, the brand came out with the Lumière Firm Illuminating Tightening Eye Cream ($108) “which I thought was great because it had peptides,” she says. Next came the cream she uses today: the Lumière Firm Riche Illuminating Tightening Eye Cream ($118). The Firm Riche combines the creaminess of the original Lumière with the collagen-boosting peptides in the Lumière Firm, making it perfect for her dry skin.

All three formulas contain growth factors that work to support the skin’s natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, leading to firmer skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. They also all include vitamin C to help protect the skin from environmental stressors and cut down on free radical damage that can break down the skin’s collagen, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and loose skin. Plus, they have caffeine to constrict the blood vessels around the eyes, helping to reduce puffiness.

What makes the Lumière Firm and Firm Riche different from their predecessors is that they also include peptides that help boost the skin’s production of collagen and elastin, upping their firming impact. Dr. Hooper says the original Lumière and the Lumière Firm Riche are best for those with sensitive or dry skin, while the Lumière Firm is best for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Dr. Hooper admits that using an eye cream isn’t an essential skin-care step. “It is more important to use your sunscreen, your quality antioxidants, and your retinoid product on all of your skin that you want to look young every day, including your eyelids and your neck and your chest and your arms,” she says. But, it can still make a huge difference.

“Eye creams are controversial,” admits Dr. Hooper, adding that there isn’t quite enough scientific data out there to confirm you need to be using one every day.  “So why do I use [this] eye cream? Because the company does do some science-based studies. They’re not giant, they’re not rigorous, but they do enough that I believe that there is some science behind their product. The reason I use an eye cream rather than just using my face cream is that Lumière is putting higher concentrations of the growth factors and peptides into that product.”

When using an eye cream, Dr. Hooper says to make sure you’re applying it to both your upper and lower lid to reap the full benefits. If you do choose to invest in the Neocutis Lumière Eye Cream that works best for you, Dr. Hooper says you won’t be disappointed.

“I love it,” she says. “It’s a can’t-live-without product.”
