When it comes to my skin-care routine, I’m a minimalist through and through. I like to stick to the basics—a cleanser, an exfoliant, and a moisturizer—and call it a day. But every now and then, I turn to a face mask to help take my skin to the next level. That’s because face masks allow the skin to interact with a higher concentration of active ingredients, which can be a more intense nourishing treatment for problematic skin. And because my skin has been particularly dry and dull this season, I decided to give the new and improved Laneige Water Sleeping Mask ($29) a try.

In short, I wasn’t disappointed. But that’s no big surprise when it comes to Laneige products. The Korean-founded brand has garnered a reputation for being the leader in all things skin hydration, and creating solutions that leave your skin supple and dewy. This is most evident in its best-selling Lip Sleeping Mask which combines hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to create a super charged solution for chapped lips. But recently, it’s the brand’s new facial sleeping mask that is capturing the attention of beauty lovers.

A lot the hype has to do with its revamped formula, which now includes squalane (aka, the hydrogenated form of squalene). It’s a powerful emollient that helps to soften and moisturize the skin, and mimics the body’s lipids that help produce hydration. Additionally, the mask contains an ingredient called lactobacillus ferment lysate. This is a non-living probiotic that keeps the skin’s microbiome healthy and smooths the skin by reducing dead skin cells.

Given all these wonderful skin-friendly ingredients, I was excited to put the mask to the test. Right before bed, I took a quarter size amount and applied it to my face. My first thought was, “I can’t believe how smooth this feels.” It’s a cream-gel consistency that feels similar to Neutrogena Hydro Boost that derms are always raving about. It’s thick, but easily goes onto the skin. In fact, I couldn’t even tell that I had it on. There was no residue left on my bed, no tightening of the skin, and no mess to clean up after application. The mask really absorbed into my skin and stayed there as I slept throughout the night.

When I woke up, the hydration hadn’t worn off. I noticed the biggest change was around my forehead and eye area. My T-zone especially looked brighter and felt smoother. The corners of the eye and under-eye also looked fuller and had a bit more balanced tone. Overall, there was a new suppleness throughout my face that made my skin look fresh.

This stuff is definitely a win for long-lasting hydration and improving lackluster-looking skin—at least for me.
