Jamie Cullum has revealed he finally started piano lessons during lockdown.
The jazz pianist and singer, who has sold 10million albums, said he originally learnt to play ‘instinctively’ but had been inspired by his wife – the former model Sophie Dahl – and their two daughters studying piano online in January.
Cullum, 42, told the BBC‘s Headliners podcast: ‘I got in touch with a professor I know and started doing piano and harmony lessons.
‘I’m obsessed, I’ve been doing all my homework and figuring stuff out.’

The only ‘frustrating’ thing about not studying sooner, he added, was realising ‘some of the stuff I’ve been doing for years was so close to being slightly better…
‘Sometimes you just have to move your index finger one note to the left and you’ve suddenly got a really legitimately rich cord.’
Podcast host Nihal Arthanayake commented that Cullum only recently taking to lessons would ‘surprise a lot of people.’
Cullum said: ‘In terms of the nuts and bolts of what I was doing, it was nearly always done instinctively and with a sense of trying to figure it out in the moment.’
