Dr Manjusha Goel, Lead Consultant, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi shares the impact of heat wave on pregnant women

India, especially the north, is facing an intense heatwave with temperatures exceeding 47°C. This can be worrying for pregnant women, so let’s understand how to stay safe and protect the developing baby.

What is a Heatwave?

A heatwave is a prolonged period of abnormally hot weather, typically lasting over two days and affecting a large area. This exposes many people to potentially harmful conditions.

Heatwave Risks for Pregnant Women and Babies

Pregnancy changes a woman’s body’s needs. During a heatwave, the body requires more water. If a woman doesn’t stay hydrated, they risk having nausea, vomiting, headaches, muscle aches, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and dry mouth. Studies even suggest an increased risk of fetal strain, with a 17% rise per degree increase in temperature. This can manifest as a faster fetal heart rate and reduced blood flow to the baby.

Staying Safe in the Heat

  1. Limit outdoor exposure: Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
  2. Seek shade: If a woman must go outside, find shade and use an umbrella for added protection.
  3. Hydrate: Increase fluid intake, including water and electrolyte drinks.
  4. Cool down: Apply ice packs or cool, damp cloths to the neck and armpits to lower the body temperature. When to Seek Medical HelpIf a woman experiences confusion or dizziness despite taking these precautions, seek immediate medical attention.

It’s important to remember that health is our priority. By following these tips, a woman can stay safe and cool during this heatwave, protecting themselves and their developing baby.
