According to the platform, “positive ageing lives on TikTok.” And based on the numbers, it certainly is starting to look that way. With #aginggracefully gaining over 1 billion views on the app, we’re finally talking about getting older, and it’s never looked so good. The best in skin care and wellness is at our fingertips and with more people living fuller lives for longer, it’s no surprise we want to get the most out of our years. And as we enter our Mature Era, we take a look at how we’re feeling about aging gracefully.

Aging Gracefully Gains 1 Billion Views

With a staggering 1 billion views on TikTok, aging gracefully is certainly on the mind. But what is the landscape like? How are we all feeling? We dove headfirst into the tag to discover what the mood is like when it comes to getting older. And we were pleasantly surprised.

Top-performing videos in the tag are straight from the mouth of babes…or their moms. What we mean is that it’s a tag filled with mature women talking about their own experiences. Celebrities like Paulina Porizkova and Pamela Anderson routinely make headlines by going surgery- or makeup-free, and why they choose to do so. So, it’s no shock to see a Porizkova clip from The Talk making the rounds in the aging gracefully hashtag.

“I’m lucky to be 57,” Porizkova says, explaining that the maturity and wisdom of age makes her a better person. “I’m way nicer of a person now than I was 20 years ago.”

The comments are packed with women celebrating getting older. “I had my youth and lived it to the fullest,” says one commenter. “I’m ok with growing older and celebrating my older age.”

Getting Older on TikTok

But it isn’t just celebrities dominating this tag. Other videos include basic skin-care and wellness advice for looking your best as you age. And perhaps more importantly, establishing what it even means to be aging gracefully: being unapologetically you.

The overwhelming mood of this tag is about embracing yourself as you are. You should wear what makes you feel good. You should do your makeup in a way that makes you feel the most joy. “Being above 50 means you can wear whatever you want because you no longer care what people think,” explains one commenter, succinctly.

Aging gracefully, then has more to do with your outlook and wellness than it does the state of your wrinkles.

TikTok and Beauty Trends

This app has been setting trends like nobody’s business. While we’re all on pins and needles in regards to TikTok’s fate in this country, for now it remains a cultural pillar.

Just a brief look at last year’s top beauty trends will have you convinced of TikTok’s power. Maybe you recall mob wife makeup, latte makeup, revenge makeup, cold girl makeup, or strawberry girl makeup? Just how many types of girl are there?

And what do they mean for those of us who are firmly women these days?

Well, TikTok makeup trends are notoriously easy to jump in on. Usually just about prioritizing a mood or a color, these looks are simple to achieve and usually involve products you already have. While their names might sound teen-centric, the result is usually an elegant, take-it-anywhere look that is office-appropriate.

Aging Gracefully in 2024

We’re all getting older every day. In fact, by 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 years or over, according to the World Health Organization. While aging is inevitable, we’re all asking ourselves how we can do it while looking and feeling our best.

If you ask any dermatologist, they’ll tell you the number-one step you can take to ensure you’re aging gracefully is simple: sunscreen. Fort Lauderdale, FL dermatologist Matthew Elias, MD says he’s on board with anti-aging in your 20s. “You are never too young! Everyone should be using the ultimate anti-aging ingredient: sunscreen,” Dr. Elias explains.

Alongside your regular skin-care routine, ingredients like retinol are heroes for early signs of anti-aging. Additionally, as you age, there are a plethora of in-office treatments that can boost your glow and take years off your skin.

Really, when we’re talking about anti-aging, we’re talking about the health of our skin. Healthy skin looks younger, no matter what stage of life you’re in. So, it’s not that you’re never too young to anti-age, but that you’re never the wrong age to take care of your skin.
