Baking soda benefits: How to make baking soda toothpaste at home to avoid bad breath

Baking soda is most commonly used for baking, but it also has a number of health benefits, it’s been claimed. Simply making a baking soda toothpaste could be key to getting rid of your bad breath, it’s now been revealed.

Baking soda is more commonly known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK, and it’s generally known for its alkaline properties.

It’s been used as a natural deodorant and cleanser for hundreds of years, and it has numerous other benefits.

Regularly adding baking soda to your diet could help to improve your digestion, as well as lower your risk of fungal infections.

If you frequently have a build-up of plaque in your mouth, or if you have bad breath, a baking soda toothpaste may be the answer you’ve been waiting for.

Nutritionist Dr Josh Axe wrote: “We brush our teeth to remove any acidic or sugary/starchy food particles and every smidgen of plaque — that slimy biofilm that can coat our teeth and lead to tooth decay.

“But adding the right toothpaste can make brushing extra-effective.

“Adding just a little bit of something gritty (a very mild abrasive) makes brushing away that plaque a bit easier.

“Baking soda is a cheap, readily available and very effective mild abrasive.”

Baking soda toothpaste ingredients

  • Four tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Two to four tablespoons of baking soda
  • Small glass jar
  • Twenty drops of peppermint essential oil

How to make baking soda toothpaste

Warm up your coconut oil so that’s it’s completely liquid.

Pour all of your ingredients – including the coconut oil – into a large bowl, and mix everything together.

Make sure it’s all completely blended, so that there aren’t any clumps of baking soda.

Pour the mixture into a glass jar, and then simply add it to your toothbrush whenever it’s time to brush your teeth.
