Gonococcal arthritis can occur in the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, bones of the head and trunk.
What’s more, the complication is more likely to affect women than men, and is most common among sexually active teenage girls.
Medical News Today explains: “Without treatment, gonococcal infections can cause serious and permanent health problems.
“In some cases, gonorrhoea can spread beyond the initial infection site and enter the bloodstream.”
