Essex currently has the highest rate of Covid deaths, at 339.8 per 100,000.

The only comparable area with a death rate in the 300s is the London Borough of Havering.

The outer East London borough has a death rate of 328; the highest in the city.

Other boroughs have an average of roughly 100 to 250, with a city-wide total of 222.9.

Bedford, Thurrock, Medway, Kent and East Sussex are the other purple-coloured areas on the map, ranging between 259 and 290 deaths per 100,000.

The southwest is comparatively untouched, with totals in most regions far below the national average.

Devon, for example, has reported a death rate of 97.4 per 100,000 and nearby Cornwall 93.3.

The worst-effected area is the combined region of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, with 227.5 deaths per 100,000.
