All over India, there was an unprecedented heat wave. The temperature continues to soar as the heat becomes unbearable to tolerate. This has led to many suffering from heat stroke, dehydration, diarrhoea and dizziness. There are a couple of ways to protect your health from the blazing heat and the sun.
Siddha medicine practitioner, Dr Komalavalli from Tirunelveli, shared that as sweat production and heat increase in the body, no matter the water intake, one will continue to feel thirsty, experience skin dryness, fatigue due to excessive sweating, lethargy, skin problems, muscle spasms and much more. He advised children, elderly people and patients with co-morbidities such as high blood pressure and diabetes should be careful during this period.

Drinking an average of 2.7 to 3.7 litres of water every day can help prevent dehydration from excessive swimming and also help against Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). He also advised soaking a few gooseberry, nannari (Indian Sarsaparilla), cumin seeds and Vetiver root in water. Drinking this can help get rid of excess bile in the body. To compensate for the loss of electrolytes from the body, he suggested drinking tender coconut water. It is packed with nutrients like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus that help in keeping the body hydrated and relieves fatigue.
Dr Komalavalli further advised everyone to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables. Through this, the body will be able to get all the vital nutrients. It also helps in getting rid of waste and toxins in the body. He recommends the intake of lemons as they reduce body heat and quench the thirst, cucumbers, contain 96 per cent water get rid of body toxins and improve health. According to him, it also removes skin redness and alleviates irritation caused by the heat. The expert further added that herbal drinks should also be consumed.
In addition to this, it is best to try to stay indoors during the peak heat time. Doctors across the country have suggested wearing lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Avoid intense exercises as it can lead to excessive sweating which will further result in dehydration.
