Sophie Turner Says Motherhood Changed Her Relationship with Her Body

Sophie Turner said she’s the happiest she’s been in a “really long time,” in a revealing interview with British Vogue. In the feature story, the 28-year-old actress delved into her journey with body image post-childbirth and shed light on her mental health for the first time since separating from ex-husband Joe Jonas last year.

On Her Relationship With Her Body…

Turner is a mother to two daughters, Willa and Delphine, born in 2020 and 2022 respectively. “To be honest, having kids was the best thing for my relationship to my body,” she told British Vogue.

“I remember after I had my baby, my therapist asked me how I felt in my body,” she recounted. “And of course I was like, ‘Well, there’s milk leaking from my breasts and I’ve been bleeding for a month.’ Then she reminded me how amazing it is that our bodies can do this and how important it is to put all the nutrients in your body so that it can do that. I mean, it sounds so simple, but I never thought of my body in that way before,” she said. “Being a young girl, especially one growing up in the spotlight, you really judge yourself.”

Over time, Turner’s relationship with her body has evolved, allowing her to tune out online trolls and find inner peace. Despite facing challenges such as an eating disorder and online bullies, Turner has navigated her journey with resilience. “When you’re bulimic, your face tends to bloat. So when I finally did get better in my early 20s, my face went back to normal. Then, suddenly, all the comments were about whether I’d had buccal fat removal or not. So yeah, you can never win,” she declared.

Turner admitted that she still struggles occasionally, especially in times of extreme stress. “I know when I’m in a bad headspace that the eating thing will always flare up,” she told the outlet. “But now I regulate it by sitting in the discomfort and just getting used to that feeling of being full. It’s all exposure therapy. I think life is exposure therapy.”

On Her Mental Health…

Since moving back to the UK, Turner said she’s no longer needed medication to treat her anxiety and depression. Instead, she’s found comfort in community. “There’s something about a community and a support system that I’ve never realized is so important up until now,” she said. “And I think the reason I was on medication for so long is because I didn’t have those people with me. Now that I’m back home, I’m actually the happiest I’ve been in a really long time. I’m starting over again, rediscovering what I like to do, who I like to be with.”

Among her newfound joys are getting to spend more time with her close friends, which she implies has been beneficial for both her mental well-being and overall happiness. “The number one most important thing in a relationship is communication,” she emphasized. To foster healthy communication with friends, she said they’ve adopted something called Safe Space Saturdays. During that weekend get-together, she said, “we can openly share anything on our minds and resolve it through healthy communication because I never want to be left in the dark in a relationship.”
