Rare Beauty True to Yourself Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

True to Myself

Rare Beauty True to Yourself Discovery Eyeshadow PaletteRare Beauty True to Yourself Discovery Eyeshadow Palette ($29.00 for 0.15 oz.) includes three matte eyeshadows, three shimmer eyeshadows, and one pressed glitter. Two of the seven shades were nice to work with–the last two–but the rest were disappointing, considering how nice the holiday palettes were from the brand. The matte formula tended to be thinner and more powdery with sheerer coverage (by no means “rich”). I was also surprised that they didn’t release two variations as this was more light-leaning and a second, darker and richer option would have provided options for more skin tones.

Undeniable

Undeniable is a darker, purplish-mauve with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. While the texture was silky and finely-milled to the touch, it was moderately powdery and had light fallout. The pigmentation was more medium and didn’t build up well, though it was blendable. This shade stayed on well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Genuine

Genuine is a light, peachy coral with warmer, more orange-leaning undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which could be built up to medium pigmentation or semi-opaque coverage if applied over an eyeshadow primer. The texture was soft, smooth to the touch, but it was thinner and more firmly-pressed into the pan, which may have contributed to the sheerness. It lasted for seven hours before fading visibly.

Rare Beauty Passionate Eyeshadow

Passionate

Passionate has a warmer, more coppery base with flecks of red and pink sparkle throughout. It had a drier, denser consistency that was harder to pick up with a dry brush and did not apply as evenly as one would want. I’d recommend using it with a fingertip or a dampened brush to get better results. It had semi-opaque color payoff that wore decently for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Rare Beauty Accepting Pressed Glitter
Rare Beauty Accepting Pressed Glitter
Rare Beauty Accepting Pressed Glitter

Accepting

Accepting has a transparent base chocked full of fine, peach glitter and small gold glitter. It had semi-opaque “coverage” from the sheer amount of glitter packed into the pan. The texture was just barely emollient, so the glitter didn’t adhere as well as it could have since the base lacked some slip and tackiness, though it had good distribution of the glitter particles.

This shade includes plastic (PET) glitter but is marketed as an eyeshadow palette and had no warning about it on the back of the palette (I didn’t receive the carton it came in as it was a press sample). There was fallout apparent after six hours of wear and decent migration over time (I used it as a cheek highlighter as I wasn’t comfortable using it as an eye product).

NOTICE: All products categorized under “Glitter” contain Polyethylene Terephthalate, also known as plastic or PET glitter, and it is typically cosmetic grade glitter. Inclusion of this ingredient sometimes carries a warning (in the US) that the product is “not intended for use in the immediate eye area.” This ingredient has not been approved for usage on the eyes per the FDA. In recent years, some brands are including this product in their eyeshadows without any warning or callout and effectively marketing them as eyeshadows or including a symbol of an “eye” which suggests eye usage. Via CosIng for EU, PET glitter is permitted without any restrictions or limitations. For an in-depth look at whether cosmetic grade glitter is safe, please view this post.

Loyal

Loyal is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was buildable to semi-sheer over bare skin and more medium coverage applied over primer. The consistency was soft, finely-milled, and blendable, but it was somewhat powdery and on the thinner side. It lasted nicely for seven hours before fading visibly.
