Fever, yellow sputum, and blood in the spit or nose are not common signs of asthma and could indicate other health concerns

Dr Vikas Mittal, Pulmonologist, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi shares the common signs of asthma one must watch out for

Asthma is a chronic condition that involves inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to breathing difficulties. Recognizing the common signs of asthma can help you identify the condition early and seek appropriate treatment. Here are some key signs to watch out for:

Respiratory Allergies: Early symptoms of asthma often manifest as allergies affecting the nose and throat. This can include:

  • A runny or stuffy nose
  • Nose itching
  • Nasal congestion, leading to allergic shiners (dark circles under the eyes due to nasal congestion)
  • Nasal salute, which is when a person wipes the tip of their nose with their palm

Sinus Issues: Allergic reactions in the nasal passages and sinuses can lead to:

  • Post-nasal drip, where mucus trickles down from the back of the nose into the throat
  • Recurrent throat-clearing
  • Facial pain and headaches due to sinus pressure

Coughing and Wheezing: Asthma can cause persistent coughing, often worse at night or early in the morning. Wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing, is another common sign.

Breathlessness and Chest Tightness: In asthma, the airways become constricted, leading to difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity or at rest. This can also cause chest tightness and even chest pain.

Triggers and Fluctuation: Asthma symptoms are typically intermittent and can be triggered by various factors, such as pollen, dust, changes in weather, emotional stress, and respiratory infections. Symptoms may improve with medication or spontaneously.

Fever, yellow sputum, and blood in the spit or nose are not common signs of asthma and could indicate other health concerns. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis. If you suspect you have asthma or experience any of the common signs, consult a healthcare provider for evaluation and treatment options.
