While many of us live in fear of breaking wind at the wrong moment, trapped wind is even more painful than cutting a loud one in public. These are the most common causes of trapped wind – and how to avoid it in the first place.

It might be impolite, but burping and farting are very normal facts of life, and if you aren’t passing gas you’re likely to start feeling uncomfortable pretty quickly.
If you have trapped wind, you might feel pains in your stomach, notice some bloating and even hear gurgling sounds coming from your abdomen.
Trapped wind is often caused by what you’re eating and drinking as well as how quickly you eat and drink.

How can you get rid of trapped wind?
First of all, it’s a good idea to try and identify any foods causing your trapped wind, as then you can make an effort to cut back on them and avoid trapped wind in the future.
Chewing your food slowly can reduce the risk of trapped wind, as it helps your digestive system break down your food and stops you from swallowing air.
Drinking lots of water can help speed up your digestive system, and drinking peppermint tea has been shown to reduce bloating.
A bit of light exercise after eating might also help prevent trapped wind – this doesn’t have to be any more strenuous than a quick stroll.
Massaging your stomach can also help move things along, much like you would with a small baby.
If you’ve ever had to clench for dear life during a yoga class, you’ll agree that some stretches and poses can expel any trapped wind – with immediate and sometimes embarrassing effect.
Try lying on your back and extending your legs upwards before tucking your knees into your chest, and try to hold this pose for about 20 seconds.
Stretching may also relieve some of your stomach pain, while getting things moving.
