Melville, NY dermatologist Kally Papantoniou, MD’s office is a place that patients seek out for skin-tightening and rejuvenation expertise, and this season is having a decidedly significant boom. Here are some of the most-requested solutions on the summer menu.

“We have several highly effective treatments for this depending on the specific patients needs. We offer Microneedling RF, Exilis Elite, Fraxel Dual Laser, as well as Ultherapy. All of these can be used to encourage collagen neogenesis, but our favorite by far is Ultherapy. I have been using it for 10 years as it is the gold standard for nonsurgical lifting and skin tightening! This is a favorite of our patients because it provides great lifting, reduces skin crepiness and the results are powerful.”

Does the trend typically shift as we get into summer months (more body than face, etc.)?

“As we approach warmer months, we definitely see more of interest in tightening the skin on our bodies. We especially see women looking to improve the appearance and quality of their skin on their legs, arms and buttock areas. Another popular area for treatment is the abdomen which can show crepey skin after losing weight or having a baby.

What is great about skin-tightening is most of the treatments actually don’t have a downtime, and will produce results without having a recovery period. It is important to get your treatments started earlier if you are planning on improving your skin for the warmer seasons. Our patients typically will start working on skin tightening three-to-six months prior.”

What are some differentiating factors between the modalities?

“All of the treatments that we do provide such amazing results, but each one does do certain jobs better than others. That is why it is so important for our patients to do a consult beforehand, so we make sure we are really using the best treatment for their concerns. Microneedling RF delivers radio frequency at predetermined depths of skin to enhance collagen, tighten pores, erase fine lines, and reverse crepiness of the skin. Exilis Elite uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate new collagen and elastin fiber growth, and we really love this especially for around the eyes and body. The Fraxel Dual has so many benefits, and besides being great at treating large pores, pitted acne scarring, and brown spots, it also has a frequency that stimulates new collagen formation. Lastly, Ultherapy uses ultrasound waves and allows us to actually visualize the collagen bundles to target growth. We love this primarily for the face, neck, brow, and chest.”

What is the most important thing for a patient or prospective patient to understand about these technologies?

“It is important for the patient to keep in mind that every treatment has its own protocol. Some have some downtime, some require extra sun protection, etc. For example, Ultherapy is recommended to be done once per year, but it can last for two-to-three years, and the results can be seen at two-to-six months.”
