When someone brings up a “natural deodorant” in conversation, then follows their pitch with the words “best” and “this one actually works,” it’s easy to turn your nose up at their claims (and possibly the stench that they’re not acknowledging). Deodorants that boast all of the things that they are “free” of, usually don’t have the best reputation for keeping your pits dry, your clothes sweat-stain free, and that summer stink at bay. Enter: Corpus Naturals, a brand that’s created good-looking, water-based deodorants, that use plant-based enzymes and botanical extracts to help combat B.O.

It’s rare that one would actually want to include their deodorant in a “shelfie,” but Corpus packs a double punch when it comes to both aesthetics and odor-fighting functionality. Each deodorant comes in a sleek, 100 percent recyclable, green cylinder; inside, the ingredients used are all natural, vegan, paraben free, and talc free. Unlike antiperspirants, which contain aluminum salts that plug glands and block sweat from leaving the surface of the skin all together, these deodorants are aluminum free. So while they won’t stop you from sweating entirely, they will limit how sticky you feel and help neutralize odor by using natural enzymes and botanical extracts, according to Joshua Zeichner, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City.

“We sweat to help keep our core body temperature stable. Our sweat glands are automatically controlled by our brains and respond to hot weather in the environment, physical activity, and emotional stress,” explains Dr. Zeichner. That said, since sweat is naturally odorless, the reason we’re smelly in places like the underarms, is due to bacteria that lives on our skin, instead. This is where the Corpus Naturals’ ingredient list comes in to save the day.

The deodorants are packed with natural acidic enzymes, like saccharomyces ferment, glycolic acid, and apple cider vinegar, which, “help breakdown the bacteria that leads to odor to prevent the odor from occurring,” explains Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist. Also helpful: Citric acid and fatty acids have antimicrobial properties and can help lower the levels of odor-causing bacteria, while silica and diatomaceous earth act like a sponge to absorb excess sweat.

Corpus Naturals Deodorant in The Botanist

Most importantly, Corpus Naturals deodorants also come in five different powerful, essential oil blended scents that last all day. The fragrances smell so good that reviewers liken the products to luxury perfumes rather than other natural deodorants of its kind. The scents are: California ($24), which has notes of sea salt, bergamot, and musk, Third Rose ($24), which features a woody combination of rose and citrus, The Botanist ($24), with petitgrain and vetiver root, Cedar Flora ($24), that has notes of cedar and jasmine, and No. Green ($24), that smells like bergamot, pink lemon and orange blossom. Well+Good’s beauty and fitness director, Ali Finney, previously sang these deodorants’ praises saying, “I’ve tried a lot of natural deodorants in my day, and my biggest gripe is that by 3 p.m. the inside of my shirt is coated with a thick baking soda paste that reminds me a lot of the DIY volcanos my best bud Caroline and I used to make when we were kids. I love Corpus Naturals because it’s a slick gel-like texture that stops odor with a fragrance that’s so good it has no right being lumped in as a deodorant.”
