The Scandi Slick Is the Hottest Updo of the Season — See Photos

And when it comes to Nordic living, practicality and ease is key, especially when dressing for the unpredictable climate and active lifestyle. Scandinavians are well accustomed to rain showers, gusty winds, and unexpected bouts of frizz-inducing heat, but this doesn’t stop them from cycling to work in the morning or going on an afternoon mountain hike before an evening celebration with friends. This is where the Scandi slick comes in. It’s an invincible and weather-proof option that looks just as chic as a big blowout.

“It goes hand in hand with Scandinavian mentality,” says Ingrid Fagerli Edvinsen, Norwegian stylist and content creator. “Scandinavians live under ever-changing weather conditions and often a lot of wind and rain, so it’s the perfect hairstyle to look chic, even if it’s raining. It can also push back washing hair a day, or two, which is convenient when you are busy.”

It’s gained momentum as a go-to look in Scandinavia because “it’s an easy, comfortable, and chic hairstyle that fits everything, from running errands in the city to a workout or a night out with friends,” says Maria Jønsson, Danish content creator.

How do I create the Scandi slick?

Unlike many other updos, whether your hair is long or short, textured or smooth, a slicked-back bun is easy and looks just as great — and sometimes better — than a highly stylized look. That said, curls and coils do require a smidgen more product and an extra couple of minutes, but it doesn’t make it any less quick and simple. It can be achieved on freshly washed hair, semi-clean hair, or on days where you don’t have time for a morning hair wash.

We asked Swedish hairstylist Erika Svedjevik to elaborate. “If you have thicker hair, wet strands and a strong gel will keep your hair into place,” she explains. Her favorite product for the job is Oribe Gel Serum. “It’s a semi-hard gel with a nice sheen, and it doesn’t get too flaky.” The thicker your hair, the more product you will likely need. For those extra-strong holds, Allure recommends the Best of Beauty-winning Rucker Roots Texture Styling Mousse.

If you have thinner hair, Svedjevik recommends working quickly and styling while it’s still slightly damp. This will give the illusion of thicker, fuller roots.

For a softer and gel-free version of the look, Svedjevik has another go-to Scandi method. Start by blow-drying your hair backward to add volume to the roots and texture to the hair. You don’t need to use any product at this stage, but if you want to enhance root volume and fluidity of the slick, Svedjevik recommends spritzing Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity Spray at the roots (Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum also works great if you’re on a budget).
