A protein powder that doesn’t trigger a digestive nightmare? *crickets*

Whey and casein proteins might be a staple in the standard muscle-building diet.

But they’re also notorious for wreaking havoc on sensitive GI tracts. And if you have food allergies, are vegan, or value all-natural supplements, whey and casein are out of the question.

Enter pea protein, the latest plant-based alternative gaining traction among lifters.

Of the newest — and yes, there are thousands — is Swolverine PlantPro5. So, let’s find out if this all-natural protein powder is worth the hype it receives!

About the Manufacturer – Swolverine

On top of being a creative play on words, Swolverine is one of the few supplement companies hopping on the “clean ingredient” bandwagon.

Swolverine launched back in 2018.

And though the company is still getting its footing among industry leaders like Optimum Nutrition and Muscle Tech, Swolverine’s unique approach to supplements shines bright.

We’re talking about:

  • 100% honesty on the nutrition label
  • Clinical dosing for maximum gains
  • All-natural ingredients that “agree” with the body
  • NO proprietary blends whatsoever

This fitness nutrition company has an extensive product lineup ranging from vitamin D3 and krill oil to glutamine and fat burners. Time might not be on its side, but its reputation certainly is.

What is Swolverine PlantPro5?

What is swolverine plantpro5 image

Swolverine PlantPro5 is an all-natural, vegan-friendly protein powder infusing the hottest trends in plant proteins — pea, hemp, quinoa, Sachi inchi, and pumpkin seed.

Each serving of PlantPro5 (and the BCAAs in every scoop) offers a standard 21g of protein to:

  • Fast-track muscle recovery
  • Maximize strength gains
  • Nurture heart, brain, and joint health
  • Supplement the diet with critical minerals (i.e., Copper, iron, and calcium)

It looks good. But how many times have we seen “all-natural” companies turn out to be phonies or to be overplaying the benefits of their products?

Stay tuned … we’re about to do the deep dive.

Swolverine PlantPro5 Details & Benefits

Now, since you’re reading about pea protein from an all-natural supplement company, you’re probably very particular about what you put into your body.

Honestly, good for you!

So, here’s what you need to know about PlantPro5 … aside from the 21g of protein (and 130 calories) per serving and 25 scoops per container:

The Ingredients List

Swolverine plantpro5 ingredient list image

Swolverine prides itself in its all-natural, safe products, but PlantPro5 isn’t 100% pea protein. It’s actually a combination of five different types of plant-based ingredients.

These include:

  • Pea Protein Isolate (19.2g)
  • Hemp Protein Powder (4.37g)
  • Quinoa (4.37g)
  • Sachi Inchi Protein Powder (1.75g)
  • Pumpkin Seed Protein (1.75g)

Now, if you’re making the switch from whey protein (like Swolverine’s Whey Protein Isolate), or at least considering it, seeing a powder made of 90% pea protein might make you nervous.

A vegetable … really?

Yes, and here’s why:

  • Studies show that pea protein builds muscles just as effective at building muscle as standard whey protein.
  • It can help you feel fuller for longer — what post-workout munchies?
  • Pea protein has the three muscle-building amino acids (leucine, valine, and isoleucine).
  • It’s all-natural and plant-based, making it an excellent alternative if you have a sensitive stomach or follow a vegan diet.

Pea protein might be a little low in a few amino acids, but an otherwise balanced diet should cover that without making this a deal-breaker!

Why the 4 Other Ingredients?

We can’t move on without touching on the four other ingredients that make up a smaller portion of this blend. Hint: Those ingredients turn this protein powder into a health supplement!

On top of aiding with muscle recovery and growth, you’ll also get a small daily dose of everything from omega-3s and omega-6s to antioxidants and a selection of minerals.

So, what does that mean? In simple terms, it can benefit the:

  • Heart
  • Brain
  • Joints
  • Cholesterol
  • Immune system
  • Blood
  • Bones

A scoop of PlantPro5 a day won’t keep the doctor away. But it might just add the finishing nutritional touches to an otherwise healthy diet.

How to Take Swolverine PlantPro5

Though pea protein takes a little getting used to, mixing PlantPro5 is no different than mixing a whey or casein shake. So, you’ll:

  1. Pour a scoop of PlantPro5 into a shaker bottle.
  2. Add 4-8 ounces of water (or almond milk for a nuttier, creamier shake).
  3. Shake until dissolved.

Swolverine gives you the option to take your protein either before or after your workout.

But since you’re probably in the habit of chugging down a protein shake on the way home from the gym, stick to one scoop within an hour of your workout.

3 Undeniable Benefits of Swolverine PlantPro5

Given Swolverine’s push for all-natural supplements lacking mysterious blends or controversial ingredients, you can expect PlantPro5 to:

  1. Help you pack on mass to a similar degree as your old whey powder.
  2. Last you nearly a month without needing to re-order.
  3. Go well-past the strength and muscle gains (we’re talking about the potential heart, joint, and brain benefits).

Plant-based proteins might not be your style right now. But you might just warm up to them once you give PlantPro5 the ol’ college try.

3 Negatives of Swolverine PlantPro5

1. Too Good to Be True?

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” fitness supplement, especially when protein powders are notorious for being chalky, clumpy, or having bizarre aftertastes.

The problem here is … there is no problem?

We can’t find a single bad thing said about this pea protein powder. So, we’re down to three possible conclusions:

  1. It’s really as good as it sounds (best-case scenario).
  2. It hasn’t gotten into enough hands yet to earn honest reviews (most likely).
  3. Swolverine has an incredible PR team (not likely, but it’s fun to think about).

2. The Nutritional Pitfalls

We can’t fault the minor nutritional concerns of PlantPro because they’re not the result of additives or sweeteners that Swolverine tossed in.

But they are worth mentioning:

  • 230mg of sodium is normal for peas, but it could put you over the edge if the rest of your diet consists of fast, frozen, or canned foods.
  • 7g of carbs is, again, a result of the plant-based ingredients, but this could make up a third of your daily carb intake if you’re on a keto diet.
  • 21g of protein is the middle of the road for protein — it’s neither good nor bad.

Honestly, none of these are deal-breakers unless you have a very rigid nutritional intake.

3. It Does NOT Taste Good (Editor Update)

It pains me to write this, but Swolverine’s PlantPro5 tastes bad.

After I finished taking photos of this supplement for the review, I poured a hearty scoop into my shaker bottle, mixed it with 8oz of water, and took a gulp.

After the first drink, I winced.

I honestly thought that maybe I had done something wrong and the water from my fridge was pumping out weird chemicals or something, so I took another sip.

Nope, the taste of this protein powder didn’t agree with me and if I had to describe it… it tastes like peas and faint cocoa. Not a great combination.

If you want to mask the taste by blending it up with peanut butter, bananas, or whatever else you want to throw in there – go for it.

But by itself, I couldn’t finish a single scoop.

Wrapping Up This Swolverine PlantPro5 Review

Swolverine PlantPro5 does almost everything right if you’re eyeing an all-natural protein supplement.

It’s comparable to whey protein in terms of gains and can even lend a helping hand to some minor nutritional deficiencies (like calcium and iron).

But it just doesn’t taste good by itself.

As of now, the reviews support our findings, and the slightly high carb and sodium content probably won’t even make you shrug your shoulders.
