Mr Javid, 51, who was inoculated at a Keencare pharmacy in London yesterday, said he had “done his bit”.

He added: “It’s vital that all those who are eligible come forward for both their flu and Covid-19 booster vaccines, to give themselves and their loved ones the best possible protection.”

The bumper flu programme is running alongside the booster drive for the country’s most vulnerable.

More than 2.5 million people have received a third Covid jab in England, the NHS says. This includes some for those with weakened immune systems.

Meanwhile, weekly registered Covid deaths across the UK have fallen for the first time since June, the Office for National Statistics revealed.

There were 972 deaths linked to the virus in the week to October 1, down 12.4 percent on the previous seven days.

Coronavirus accounted for around one in 13 of the total number of 12,132 deaths.

Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University, said that while there were “certainly reasons for optimism”, the numbers were “quite high”, noting that it was “still almost 140 a day”.
