Two leading Australian dieticians have revealed why you shouldn’t exercise if you want to lose weight.
Nutritionists Susie Burrell and Leanne Ward said while exercise has many health benefits, doing too much can increase hunger making it hard to lose weight or burn fat in their popular podcast The Nutrition Couch.
They said ‘you can’t out exercise a bad diet’ and high intensity workouts can increase appetite leading to overeating or binges.

Nutritionists Susie Burrell (right) and Leanne Ward (left) reveal why exercise won’t help you lose weight as it increases your appetite
‘The more exercise you do, the hungrier you get, the more food you need,’ Leanne explained.
She cited a client who’s goal was to burn fat and was doing seven to ten high intensity F45 session a week with no results.
‘She did hardcore high intensity training sessions then got hungry so she would eat more,’ the fitness dietician said.
‘That type of exercise, that high intensity exercise multiple times a week was just causing her body more stress. What happens when we’re more stressed? The body pumps out cortisol which is our fat storage hormone.’

After dropping down to three F45 sessions, strength training and a steady walk a week, Leanne said the client saw ‘fabulous results’ and is down eight to ten kilos.
She said by toning down on her hardcore exercise sessions, the woman also had more time to meal prep and plan her diet.
‘When the body’s in a constant state of stress it’s going to be difficult to lose body fat,’ Susie added.
‘A good set point is to say, given what I’m doing with my exercise program am I getting the results I should be? And if the answer is no, I would say why don’t you just take the pedal off for a while, get back to basics and get really in touch with your natural hunger.’

Susie said if you’re eating 1400-1600 a day as part of your natural appetite there’s ‘no need’ to be doing high intensity training or exercise except for all the other health benefits it brings.
‘Exercise can help with our cardiovascular health, it can help us decrease stress and anxiety, it can help us build healthier bones and help improve our bone density – there’s so many wonderful benefits of exercise,’ Leanne said.
‘Exercise creates your shape, nutrition controls your body fat.’
