Mel Gibson showed off his physique and bulging biceps as he worked out at a Scots gym ahead of his big appearance at a live event in the city of Glasgow.

The 66-year old Braveheart star, who also reminisced earlier in the day that it was 28 years since he last visited Scotland – and said he ‘didn’t remember much’ about his visit to Glasgow, decided to go for a workout ahead of his VIP dinner date.

Mel, who was appearing in the country for An Experience With at Glasgow’s Doubletree Hilton hotel in the city, where audiences had paid upwards of £100 a ticket, plus £300 to get a picture with the Hollywood star, popped into Everyday Athlete Gym.

He met owner and Irish actor Patrick O’ Brien who has appeared in Peaky Blinders, and trainer Tommy Young on Sunday afternoon and looked like he’d worked up a sweat as he posed with them, smiling in his perspiration-dampened black vest, trousers and baseball cap following their workout.

Mel also had, in his hands, his iPhone complete with its setting on the stopwatch app indicating he’s been timing his reps.

The Possil gym is a fitness facility that specialises in Muay Thai boxing, Strength and Conditioning.

It claims: ‘At Everyday Athlete you won’t find rows of stationary bikes and weight machines. Instead you will find pull-up bars, barbells, rowers, kettlebells and wide open space for moving your body the way it is supposed to be moved.

‘We focus on improving functional movements that are necessary and common in your daily activities.’

Mel was recently spotted in a climbing gym in Hungary where he was filming Continental, a prequel to his movie John Wick.

Over the last few years he has enjoyed working out and in 2018 worked with celebrity personal trainer Sam Jackson to ditch his dad bod and shed a staggering 14 kilograms in just eight weeks.

On Sunday evening he took centre stage at the Experience With live event, which sees celebrities attending a luxe night out, being interviewed on stage in a room full of fans.

The movie icon previously did an event with the company last year in London, while others such as Sylvester Stallone, Al Pacino and Arnold Schwarzenegger have also taken part.

Gibson’s last visit to Glasgow was to attend the premiere of historical drama Braveheart, which he directed and starred in as 13th century warrior Sir William Wallis.

Joking that he was scared to return, the actor – a recovering alcoholic – previously told MailOnline:  ‘I haven’t gone back since because I’m afraid.

‘I’d never get sober for one thing, and to have to run around in a dress. . . it’s cold up there!’
