[unpaid/sample] We are as far away from £50 creams as we possibly could be with Lotil and yet, if you have extremely dry skin that needs a lot of attention, it’s not sustainable (for most of us) to be constantly slathering luxury products all over our body. I am happy using whatever works, particularly for my body which is now drier than it used to be. I take skin supplements which keeps a lot of the dryness at bay but not entirely any more. Vaseline does the job, as does O’Keefe’s and E45 and as will Lotil.
The ingredients are basic – but they’re there to rehydrate skin and prevent moisture from leaving it and that’s pretty much all dry skin needs. I’ve broken down the ingredient list so you can see what’s there and why.
Aqua (Water), Glyceryl Stearate SE (a combination of glycerin and stearic acid), Glycerin, Lanolin Alcohol ( non-drying organic compound produced from lanolin), Benzyl Alcohol (preservative considered safe for skin), Cetearyl Alcohol (fatty alcohols considered safe for skin), Oleic Acid (omega 9 fatty acid), Triethanolamine (Emulsifier and pH adjuster and considered safe for skin), Stearic Acid (fatty acid), p-Chloro-m-Cresol (germacide – unlikely but possible irritant), Parfum (Fragrance) – Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Anise Alcohol, Benzyl Cinnamate.
p-Chloro-m-Cresol is there because it offers an anti-bacterial quality and that’s important if you have sore skin that’s prone to infection. Compared to many products this is a very short ingredient list and that’s because it doesn’t need to add any extras to get the desired effect. A 50ml tube is £3.99.
It’s really easy to get side-tracked by products that offer more than you need and I think body products are where you can make savings although that said, I’ll put in a word for the lip balm which I’ve used blended with lipstick to get a low sheen balm – and it’s £1.99. I’m always conscious that I’m recommending products that very quickly drain the old bank account – a spell of basics that are good for the skin and good for the wallet is a wise decision! I’m taking a few days in the sunshine (hopefully it’s sunny!) soon so I’ve been using the foot cream just in case it’s warm enough for Fitflops – really, I don’t have a single complaint because sure enough, my feet are less dry and better looking than when I started and very acceptable to be shown :-).
