Loneliness increases risk of heart disease and death, research suggests

Socially isolated people are about 30 per cent more likely to suffer and die from a stroke of heart attack. The University of California, San Diego, looked at four decades of cases to reach its findings.

The risk increases with age due to factors such as widowhood and retirement – but scientists say more young people are also feeling alone.

An estimated one in 10 Britons feels lonely all or most of the time.
