Tamil Nadu government recently made an important announcement for summer travellers: those planning to visit the picturesque hill stations of Ooty and Kodaikanal via private vehicles will need an e-pass for entry. To manage the influx of tourists and ensure sustainable tourism practices, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced a requirement for e-passes for visitors driving into these popular destinations. Let’s explore how to navigate this new process seamlessly:

Why e-passes are mandatory?

The Madras High Court issued an order to regulate vehicle entry into hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal, recognizing the surge in tourist numbers during peak seasons. This rule was initiated on May 6 and will remain effective until June 30. These passes aren’t about limiting access; rather, they serve as a means for the government to collect data on vehicle numbers, passenger count, and duration of stays. There’s no additional fee for obtaining the e-pass. Tourists only need to pay the existing entry pass fee to access the Nilgiris district. This information will aid in making informed decisions regarding infrastructural changes in Ooty and Kodaikanal in the future.

Furthermore, Nilgiris’ mega tourism event, the summer flower festival is all set to begin at Ooty tomorrow, May 10.

Who needs an e-pass?

E-passes are primarily required for all individuals driving into these hill stations in private vehicles. However, residents of these hill stations and tourists arriving via government buses are exempt from this rule.

How to apply for an e-pass?

It’s a straightforward process facilitated through the official website epass.tnega.org. The online application prompts you to provide essential details such as the number of passengers, vehicle specifications including fuel type, intended dates of entry and exit, the purpose of visit, and your contact information. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive an e-pass with a unique QR code. This code will be verified at designated entry points in Ooty and Kodaikanal, ensuring hassle-free access for authorized vehicles.

Last week, popular tourist spots in Ooty like the botanical garden and boat house saw a significant drop in visitors. Tour operators link this decline to new travel restrictions implemented to ease traffic congestion. Only light and medium vehicles can enter the town, while larger vehicles like tempo travelers and buses are restricted from 6 AM to 8 PM.
