Golden Globe actor James Brolin shares what made him ‘look better’ in older age

“I’m at a party at a friend of mine’s, and one night Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese [were] there,” Brolin began. “Laird said, ‘Why don’t you come on up to the pool and work out with us on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday?’ So I went, ‘Yeah, OK, great.’ I didn’t.” The suggestion, however, had taken root, and Brolin found himself wanting to do water aerobics.

“I got up early and I said, ‘I’m going up there,'” he told People. “Then I became a regular and it changed my life working out with weights under water.”

Progressively moving from 10lb weights to 20lb weights, Brolin said he “started to change”.

“Everything started to change,” he added. “I just started to look better. Body, face, eyes, thinking… therefore proving the old, boring thing that exercise really works.”

The star, best known for his roles in the films Westworld (1973), Capricorn One (1977), and Traffic (2000), is also a fan of the sauna.

“I have a sauna at home,” he revealed to the publication in September, 2022.

“All the toxins come to the surface and are gone,” he attested.

In addition to exercising and sweating out toxins, Brolin likes to eat healthily.

His favourite meal? A “Greek salad, or Mediterranean salad and a handful of cheese on it” he replied.

The health benefits of water aerobics

Committing to water aerobics on a weekly basis works towards the recommended 150 minutes of exercise the NHS says people need to do.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) confirms that a “water workout will do you the world of good”.

Health benefits of water aerobics includes improved cardiovascular health, strengthened and toned muscles, and improved flexibility.

“Water is about 12 times more resistant than air, so you have to work a lot harder to do the same movements,” the BHF notes.

Moreover, sauna use “appears to reduce morbidity and mortality in a dose-dependent manner”.

Frequent sauna use may protect against cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease, the study authors added.

It seems as though Brolin is on the right track to prolonging his longevity.

In addition to working out and sitting in a sauna, his choice of a Mediterranean salad is another way Brolin enhances his health.
