Poor eating habits like not chewing food properly, overconsumption of the chewing gums, and eating too late also build up large amounts of gas in the body.

The feeling of being stuffed and having a bloated stomach is a fairly common problem that many people face after finishing their meals. There can be many reasons behind it, mostly due to overeating or not chewing properly, etc. It is a very uncomfortable feeling to feel full and tight after having meals, which is very unwanted.

Now, the question arises what leads to this feeling of being too full post-meal? Most commonly, gas can accumulate in the intestines when you eat too much, or swallow air while eating. Let us take a look at all the possible reasons responsible for bloating. According to the gastroenterologist Dr Shrihari Anikhindi, these are the reasons for the bloating problem.

1. Health ailments- Many health issues like irritable bowel syndrome, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Crohn’s disease, etc can lead to flatulence. Flatulence is a buildup of gas in the digestive system that can lead to abdominal discomfort. Excessive flatulence can cause discomfort and distress.

2. Milk intolerance- As per Doctor Anikhindi, milk is one of the nutritious diets in our country, but 70 per cent of Indians suffer from milk intolerance or lactose intolerance. Milk Intolerance means the inability to fully digest sugar (lactose) in dairy products. It is a digestive disorder usually caused by a deficiency of an enzyme in the body called lactase.

3. Processed Foods- Processed foods like pizzas and burgers are high in sodium which makes them retain water in the body. This causes the stomach to feel bloated. Therefore, it is advised to have a limited intake of these foods.

4. Carbonated drinks- Consumption of carbonated drinks is another extremely common cause of bloating. These drinks contain high amounts of carbon dioxide. When you drink one of these beverages, you end up consuming large amounts of this gas. This can get trapped and increase pressure in the stomach.

5. Poor eating habits- Poor eating habits like not chewing food properly, overconsumption of chewing gums, and eating too late also build up large amounts of gas in the body.

6. Lack of exercise- Bloating can be caused by lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise. People should go for a walk or do yoga. They provide a safe method to help alleviate some of the discomfort of bloating.
