Weight loss is best achieved through regular exercise and healthier eating habits. But some experts believe the addition of supplements can boost your efforts in shedding the pounds.
Naturopathic doctor Dr Janine Bowring recommended the consumption of ginseng. In a video posted to her TikTok channel she cited a study that demonstrated its weight loss abilities.
A study published in 2014 titled ‘Influence of Panax ginseng on obesity and gut microbiota in obese middle-aged Korean women’ showed not only can ginseng aid weight loss, but it can help lower blood glucose levels, is an adaptogenic (meaning it helps the body manage stress), and alters gut flora.
Dr Bowring offered four other benefits the supplement could offer:
1. Potent antioxidant
It’s great for anti-ageing, said Dr Bowring, for the beauty of your skin.
2. Helps our immune function
It increases something called phagocytosis, said Dr Bowring.
Phagocytosis is a cellular process for ingesting and eliminating particles, including foreign substances and microorganisms. This helps with immune response.
3. Improves blood flow
It improves blood flow, said Dr Bowring, so is great for cardiac function and reduces cardiac hypertrophy.
Hypertrophy is the increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells.
4. Natural antibiotic
It’s a natural antibiotic, which means it kills off bad bacteria, things like H.Pylori, said Dr Bowring.
There are lots of different types of ginseng, but Dr Bowring referred to Asian ginseng.
Korean Ginseng is available for as little as £8.50 (1200mg x 90 tablets).
