Date, Time and Dhantrayodashi Muhurat in Indian Cities

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of Hindu festival Diwali. The festival is celebrated on the Trayodashi Tithi (Thirteenth day) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious day, Hindu devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari – the God of Ayurveda. Lord Dhanvantari is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu who reserved the vessel containing Amrit (immortality).

Lord Dhanvantari imparted the knowledge of medicine to help rid humankind of the suffering of disease and for their betterment. On the day of Dhanteras, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth is worshipped and rituals are performed with lamps of clay (diyas) being lit in the evening. Lord Kubera is also worshipped by devotees on the day.

The day is considered extremely auspicious as per Hindu tradition, for making new purchases. Items of gold, silver and new utensils are bought as a sign of good luck. This year in India, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Friday, November 13.
