Anthony Hopkins Says Fragrance Is a ‘Form of Meditation’ for Him and Shares What’s Next for His Collection

When Anthony Hopkins announced he had developed a home fragrance brand two weeks back, it was pretty much the most unexpected olfactory-powered product launch, well, ever. But, as the 82-year-old Academy Award winner told us, the aptly named Anthony Hopkins AH Eau de Parfum and Home Fragrance Candle and Diffuser Collection is a culmination of years of inspiration, memories and various forms of art, fueled by a timely cause.

Has fragrance always been something you’ve been interested in?
Yes, fragrances and aromas have always played an important role in my life. For me, they are a form of meditation. Whether I’m acting, playing music or painting in my studio, fragrance creates a mood of peace and invokes a sense of gratitude.

Where did you get your inspiration for the collection?
All the fragrances and scents were inspired by my youth. Ever since I was a child, I remember enjoying the smell of the orange tree in my grandfather’s garden. These fond memories are the inspiration behind the aromas that I use in the collection.

Did you find yourself more creative during the time spent at home?
In the beginning of quarantine, I did a lot of self-reflecting and felt immense gratitude for my health and wellbeing. This year has brought a lot of turmoil to many people’s lives, so I just wanted to give back and spread some kind of help to kids, in particular. That is why I partnered with No Kid Hungry. Every purchase provides up to 50 meals to kids in need, in efforts to end childhood hunger in America.

Any surprises you had when launching the line?
I was surprised at how seamlessly everything came together. I knew that I wanted this brand to be rooted in my commitment to No Kid Hungry. Helping children is the driving force of this brand, and why I created it.

The fragrances themselves came to be very organically as well. The three scents, Sandalwood, Amber Noir and Gardenia Tuberose, were all birthed on pure instinct and intuition, pulling inspiration from my own childhood memories.

It’s been an absolute passion project and I feel proud to have launched it.

What’s next for the line—any “dream” products you’re planning?
People seem to love my colorful shirts and watches, so maybe that might be next.
