3 Trending Hairstyles Inspired by Princess Diana

Along with tracksuits, acid-wash jeans and shoulder pads, 80’s and 90’s-inspired hairstyles are having a moment. While various hair trends are making a serious comeback—hello, banana clips and crimped locks—some our favorites are inspired by the iconic Princess Diana.

Sam McKnight was the stylist responsible for Princess Diana’s cuts over the years, and similar to our moods in 2020, he tells The Cut her styles were constantly changing. When McKnight first started working with the princess, she was rocking chunky highlights and permed locks, and it was at that point that he realized it was time to bring her personal style to a whole new level.

“The idea was almost to start again, to do something that was stronger, more casual, more her,” McKnight told The Cut. The big debut of her new, more-modernized hair was on the 1997 Vanity Fair cover, but it was just an amped-up version of her previous mushroom cut. “She never considered going long,” said McKnight, who explained that long locks might have looked too “princess-y” and that she was adamant about staying true to herself.

Although her styles changed through the years, all of them still inspire us. Here’s a look back on her Pin-worthy looks and how to get them today.

The Tousled Pixi

While Diana’s extra-voluminous, layered side bangs are not as in, a more retro version of her look is popping up everywhere: The tousled pixi.

The Mullet

Diana’s classic mushroom cut will forever be in our hearts, but new-to-the-game mullets are taking over, and Miley Cyrus’s wispy look shows why.

The Angular Bob

Diana’s tucked and curled bob was the ultimate face-framer, but in 2020 we’ve been seeing hair flip outwards rather than inwards.
